d01 - Mounting and installation RS02


The purpose of this guideline is to support architects, engineers or builders to use the BFIRST Roofing Shingle Module (RS) in the right way and to install them on the roof of buildings.

The basic construction and the materials for construction are described in guideline b1. This guideline shows the practical aspects and experience from the installation.

Components description. 

1. Vertical profile ALUVER Eco
Aluminium vertical profile installed over wooden beams and that serves as a support for the ALUTEC horizontal profiles.

2. Horizontal profile ALUTEC FL
Aluminium horizontal profile for inserting the BIPV modules.

3. ALUTEC retaining clip.
Aluminium clip for mounting ALUTEC horizontal profiles on ALUVER vertical rails.

4. ALUTEC FL Insertion rail

5. EPDM edge protector
EPDM rubber edge protector for frameless BIPV modules.

6. T-Piece for modules without frames

9. Omega and hook profiles.

The omega profiles are manufactured on demand by the local company Facozinc.

10. Screws

Wurtz screws are used to attach these aluminum profiles to the wood structure. For each 5.4 m long ALUVER rail, 3 screws A2-Z2-5 x 70 and 8 screws A2-AW20-4.5 x 60 are needed.

Installation of profiles on the roof

The vertical profiles are place on top of the beams to have maximum strength. The Celit 4D roof is too soft for that. For easy mounting an extra vertical wooden bat is placed on top of the Celit 4D at the location of the underlaying beam. The profiles can easily screwed in the wooden bat.

First the Creotecc ALUVER vertical profiles are mounted to support the horizontal profiles (ALUTEC FL). Then the Omega profiles are placed in between two roofing shingles in order to collect the rain water that will flow in the space between the modules.

Three types of profiles have been used:

  1. Omega profiles that will be placed in between 2 panels in order to collect the rain water that may flow in the vertical space between 2 panels.
  2. Creotecc ALUVER profiles that are used to support the horizontal profiles (ALUTEC FL).
  3. Profiles at the left and right edge of the roof (2 * 2 profiles) are placed. Special fixture

Three types of profiles: Omega, Hook and ALUVER Eco profiles.

The figures below show the positions and number of these profiles. More detailed, the vertical profiles are mounted with screws over the wooden profiles and the Omega profiles on the roof surface alternately every 70 cm. The first and the last profile of the roof are the special fixture profiles.

Installation of the horizontal profiles

Eightteen Creotecc RL ALUTEC FL profiles are available. They are placed horizontally and are attached on the ALUVER profiles. Some are placed with their original length (605 cm) while some other are cut. The attachment is performed using the clips HC1-NUS.
The vertical distance between 2 ALUTEC RL profiles is of the highest importance because this space must allow inserting the panel but must also make sure that the panels will be difficult to remove by the wind.

Starting from the left bottom corner of the roof, we mount the first horizontal profile, Then, using a module as a guide, we define the best gap between the horizontal profiles. After that and having mounted the second profile, we repeat the procedure to mount the rest of the profiles. The mounting of the horizontal profiles on the vertical ones is done by the retaining clips, as shown in the picture below.

Installation of the modules

After the framework is installed, we start placing the modules. The pictures below present the general principle of the module placement. The modules are slided in the horizontal profiles and fixed with the use of EPDM joins :

  • 2 80 mm joins on the top side of the panel
  • 2 80 mm joins on the bottom side of the panel
  • 1 40 mm join on the side of the panel

The pictures below show the panel insertion inside the upper rail and the final position of the EPDM joins in the ALUTEC FL rail.
In order to avoid any risk of removal of a panel due to the wind, it is proposed to place an additional join (T join).
